Prepare For Hurricane Season Early

In the midst of the current worldwide Corona pandemic, it is difficult to think about the fact that hurricane season is two months away. While the season doesn’t begin until June 1st, federal and local officials anticipate the coronavirus will have an impact until then, if not beyond. Unfortunately, for those of us in Florida and other eastern and gulf coastal states, one crisis does not negate the necessity of preparing for the other! The season continues through November 30th.

The early forecast for the 2020 storm season is out and it is projected to be above average. Dr. Philip Klotzbach and researchers from Colorado State University, are predicting 16 named storms, eight hurricanes and four major hurricanes. With this forecast in mind, amid dealing with the current state of Safer at Home mandates, we really must take time to step back and prepare ourselves, now more than ever.

Preparation is always key for hurricane season, but now we must consider other possibilities for evacuation because of Covid 19. Where will we go? One must consider the possibility of getting sick or making others sick. Get all of your health insurance card and prescriptions ready, in case you have to evacuate. Start planning now!

Most of us are working from home now, due to Covid 19, it’s a great opportunity to get your insurance in order and make sure you have flood insurance. Get the valuables you scramble to put in a safe place organized now! You can begin storing your provisions for hurricane season while maintaing your Safer at Home stockpile.

Get your house in order! Being at home more affords you the time to see what needs to be taken care of around the house. Trim the trees back from the house, clear out gutters and see if repairs are needed, have the roof inspected and/or repaired. Any exterior housekeeping that has been put off, because of lack of time, see to it now. Roofers, tree trimmers and general construction businesses are considered “essential”, so take care of those things and help support your local businesses at the same time.

No one is thinking about purchasing boards to cover windows at this time. This makes it a perfect opportunity to get those purchased and ready to put in place. If you haven’t in past years, go ahead and get your anchors installed around the windows, so boarding up windows will be less stressful when the storm comes. Become a weekend warrior and get outside and prepare your house.

Covid 19 is part of our reality right now, so use the two months of preparation for hurricane season as a distraction. Prepare yourself for the storm season to come, even though there are still so many unknowns in our future.
