Dryer Lint Danger!

Did you know that by not cleaning your dryer exhaust vent and duct work, you run the risk of destroying your home? Truth! It is the leading cause of dryer fires. According to the National Fire Protection agency survey, Americans experienced upwards of 16,000 dryer fires between 2010 – 2014. Dryer vents should be inspected and cleaned annually. If your household does a lot of laundry, they should be cleaned at least three times a year.

Tips To Look For When It’s Time For A Cleaning:

  • Clothes take longer to dry. This probably means the air flow is blocked and cannot dry the clothes efficiently. Cleaning your ducts will keep your dryer and home safer, as well as helping your dryer do it’s job more efficiently.
  • The dryer’s external cabinet is hotter than normal to the touch.

How To Inspect And Clean:

1. Check the outside vents for obstructions – nests, lint build-up, and debris left by animal life.

2. Clean the lint screen following every cycle. Use a long, flexible brush to clean down inside the body of the dryer. An air compressor may blow the lint out or a combo vacuum cleaner with brush attachment if the hose is long enough. It is important to remove the lint from the entire length of the vent.

3. Remove dust from behind the dryer, as well as the floor, including the space beneath the dryer and the back of the dryer itself. The air intake comes from the back of the dryer, so any dust left back there will be pulled into the dryer causing more lint to build up.

4. Don’t forget to clean out or replace the duct work leading from the dryer to the outside vent. It is suggested to use a folded semi-rigid metal duct in lieu of foil ducts, because it supports the highest air flow. Neve use white vinyl or plastic ducts as dryer vents.

Vent brushes and dryer vent cleaning kits may be found at your local hardware store and online. The tools are made specifically for cleaning your dryer and will help you remove the lint from difficult to reach areas inside the dryer & duct work. It’s an even better idea to have your dryer vents inspected and cleaned by a professional occasionally. A professional will ensure that your vent and duct work are cleaned thoroughly and make sure your venting system is working at its best.

When Disaster Strikes – Call A Professional Restoration Company

When a storm, fire or water causes damage to your home, it can be difficult to know what action to take firs. Where and how does one begin the cleanup? The best step to take when it comes to reclaiming your home, is contacting a professional restoration service.

Storm Damage

Large storm systems and hurricanes can leave massive damage in their wake. Wind damage – whether from the wind itself or debris tossed about by it’s force can cause roof damage – which can leave your home susceptible to water damage. A leaky roof makes way for water and structural damage.

Fire and Smoke Damage

Professional restoration cleanup is imperative if your home has been damaged by fire and smoke. The affected areas can be treated, removed and remediated. However, smoke can leave minute particles behind that sink into tight spaces, that can cause an unwelcome stench in your home. The ever-present smoke damage also opens you to health risks – because long term exposure can contribute to respiratory issues.

Water Damage

Flooding from storms or water damage from leaky pipes or appliances can cause great damage to the structure of your home. However, there is more than one type of damage that can be left by water. Aside from the obvious damage to the contents of your home, there is the added risk of mold growth later. Time is crucial in water damage remediation. The sooner you get your home cleaned and dried out – the lower the risk of long term damage.

Seek Help Immediately

No matter what type of damage has occurred to your home, don’t wait to begin the cleanup process. The sooner you bring a professional in to help, the sooner your home will be returned to the haven is was before damage was sustained.

Purifying The Air With Hydroxyl Generators

What is a Hydroxyl Generator?

Hydroxyls (-OH) are safe, naturally occurring molecules that are created in our atmosphere when the sun’s ultraviolet rays react with water vapor. They play a critical role in cleaning the earth’s atmosphere and are often referred to as the “detergent” of the atmosphere. In chemistry, they are described as a molecule consisting of an oxygen atom and a hydrogen atom joined by a covalent bond – this means they share a pair of electrons. They are neutral, because they have nine shared bonds, but it is the free electron which makes hydroxyls so highly reactive and they will bond with any odor and neutralize it. Hydroxyl molecules are so tiny that they will penetrate anywhere odors or micro-organisms may be. They are smaller and more effective at eliminating pollutants than liquid chlorine, hydrogen peroxide and ozone. Hydroxyl generators do not use chemicals and leaves no residue behind. Hydroxyls can be used to kill bacteria, viruses and mold. They can also be used to break down volatile organic compounds (VOCs), chemical fumes, gases, vapors and unpleasant odors. Hydroxyl generators are even safe to use on sensitive materials like rubber, leather and electronics.

The Odorox hydroxyl generators, like the one shown in the image above, use a two part treatment process to eliminate odors, decontaminate surfaces and purify the air. The processing chamber purifies the air and creates hydroxyls. The hydroxyl molecules exit the chamber to decontaminate surfaces and contents and to further purify the air.

The processing chamber alone is sufficient to treat the air. As air passes through, it is exposed to multiple wavelengths of UV light. The first segment of the optics produces wavelengths that deodorize the air flow. It will break down chemical vapors, volatile organic compounds and odors as they travel through the chamber. The second segment of the optics produces wavelengths that kill micro-organisms and prevent them from multiplying. It will kill bacteria, viruses and mold as they travel through the chamber. As water vapor (H2O) passes through the chamber, it is broken down into a hydrogen atom (H) and a hydroxyl (-OH). The hydroxyl molecules are the key to the second part of the treatment process. There have been many applications where the Odorox machine is set outside of the contaminated area. clean air is drawn into the processing chamber, hydroxyls are created and then injected into the contaminated area. The hydroxyls will then go to work on the air, structure and contents of that area. The contaminated air does not need to pass through the processing chamber to be cleaned.

Why use an Odorox hydroxyl generator?

  1. Safer than ozone. Ozone causes damage to plants and the mucous and respiratory tissue in humans and animals.
  2. Odorox can be installed immediately, because hydroxyls are safe for people, pets, plants and sensitive materials. This means that while the physical cleaning is being performed, Odorox is deodorizing simultaneously.
  3. Homeowners can stay home and businesses can stay open while Odorox is operating. This reduces or eliminates additional living expenses (ALE) and business interruption costs for the insurance companies.
  4. Hydroxyls are more effective than any other method. This means that many items previously though to be unsalvageable can now be restored, like rubber, leather and electronics.
  5. Odorox reduces the work involved with cleaning drapes, upholstery, carpets, laundry and dry cleaning. Most of this can now be handled on site.
  6. Odorox does not use chemicals and leaves no residue.
  7. Using an Odorox hydroxyl generator for 12 hours has been proven to reduce the presence of E. coli, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa on stainless steel and cotton fabric by 99%.

PRS uses hydroxyl generators to restore our customers homes to a clean, safe environment in a timely manner.

In what instance would a hydroxyl generator be used?

A hydroxyl generator would be used anywhere odors, bacteria, viruses or mold are present. Some instances are shown below:

  • Fire and smoke restoration
  • Water and flood restoration
  • Mold mitigation
  • Sewage backups
  • Trauma scene and biohazard cleanup
  • Odor elimination
  • Contents restoration
  • Eliminate volatile organic compounds

Fire Restoration: Getting Back to Pre-loss Conditions

Fire is merciless. This is a known fact, a disastrous event that no one wants to take part in. Fire can be prevented in more ways than one could imagine. Every home and commercial establishment should take safety precautions and preventive measures for such a disaster. Sadly, things still do happen.

Fire is a devastator. When left uncontrolled, it will devour everything leaving only ashes in its path. It will not only damage property but the victims’ morale as well. When fire does happen, always notify everyone and get to safety as soon as possible. There is no measure for the value of human life. For damaged properties, there are still options. Fire restoration can still be done to save what’s left of the fire.

Professional Fire Restoration Services

Fire restoration services are made available by providers like Professional Restoration Services of Tampa Bay, Inc. – PRS. Fire restoration is a top priority and a sign of moving on from a disaster. More than just a property restoration, it brings out another beginning to the customers of PRS.

Fire restoration from PRS brings your property back to its pre-loss condition. PRS understands what it means to bring back homes and commercial establishments and does it like it’s their own. With PRS, you can be sure that all work done is held to a high standard of quality.

Smoke remediation should also be made an option after the fire restoration. Smoke from the fire leaves traces of residue and markings on walls and ceilings. This also leaves an arid smell of the disaster that would have been the end of the property.

Insurance Against Fire

If hit by fire with everyone safe and everything put out, you should contact your insurance provider and inform them of the tragedy. This should be the smartest thing to do and let fire restoration start. This also gives you an overview of the coverage and the cost of the restoration.

PRS can automatically bill your insurance company so you can deal with the other aspects of the disaster. When there is no insurance to back you up, PRS will accept payments though Mastercard and Visa. This could be the most convenient mode of payment for those trying to rebuild and start over.

Always have the fire damage assessed both by PRS and your insurance company representative. Fire restoration cannot begin without the confirmation of the both parties.

Preventing Fire

Fire can be prevented, put out or at least be controlled. Preparedness plays a vital role in this. Controlling or putting out fire before it spreads to a drastic level reduces fire damage and reduces the cost for restoration.

Having fire extinguishers and knowing what type of fire and the source of the fire should aid in the prevention. Vigilance against fire will not only save property but lives as well.
