When Disaster Strikes – Call A Professional Restoration Company

When a storm, fire or water causes damage to your home, it can be difficult to know what action to take firs. Where and how does one begin the cleanup? The best step to take when it comes to reclaiming your home, is contacting a professional restoration service.

Storm Damage

Large storm systems and hurricanes can leave massive damage in their wake. Wind damage – whether from the wind itself or debris tossed about by it’s force can cause roof damage – which can leave your home susceptible to water damage. A leaky roof makes way for water and structural damage.

Fire and Smoke Damage

Professional restoration cleanup is imperative if your home has been damaged by fire and smoke. The affected areas can be treated, removed and remediated. However, smoke can leave minute particles behind that sink into tight spaces, that can cause an unwelcome stench in your home. The ever-present smoke damage also opens you to health risks – because long term exposure can contribute to respiratory issues.

Water Damage

Flooding from storms or water damage from leaky pipes or appliances can cause great damage to the structure of your home. However, there is more than one type of damage that can be left by water. Aside from the obvious damage to the contents of your home, there is the added risk of mold growth later. Time is crucial in water damage remediation. The sooner you get your home cleaned and dried out – the lower the risk of long term damage.

Seek Help Immediately

No matter what type of damage has occurred to your home, don’t wait to begin the cleanup process. The sooner you bring a professional in to help, the sooner your home will be returned to the haven is was before damage was sustained.

Purifying The Air With Hydroxyl Generators

What is a Hydroxyl Generator?

Hydroxyls (-OH) are safe, naturally occurring molecules that are created in our atmosphere when the sun’s ultraviolet rays react with water vapor. They play a critical role in cleaning the earth’s atmosphere and are often referred to as the “detergent” of the atmosphere. In chemistry, they are described as a molecule consisting of an oxygen atom and a hydrogen atom joined by a covalent bond – this means they share a pair of electrons. They are neutral, because they have nine shared bonds, but it is the free electron which makes hydroxyls so highly reactive and they will bond with any odor and neutralize it. Hydroxyl molecules are so tiny that they will penetrate anywhere odors or micro-organisms may be. They are smaller and more effective at eliminating pollutants than liquid chlorine, hydrogen peroxide and ozone. Hydroxyl generators do not use chemicals and leaves no residue behind. Hydroxyls can be used to kill bacteria, viruses and mold. They can also be used to break down volatile organic compounds (VOCs), chemical fumes, gases, vapors and unpleasant odors. Hydroxyl generators are even safe to use on sensitive materials like rubber, leather and electronics.

The Odorox hydroxyl generators, like the one shown in the image above, use a two part treatment process to eliminate odors, decontaminate surfaces and purify the air. The processing chamber purifies the air and creates hydroxyls. The hydroxyl molecules exit the chamber to decontaminate surfaces and contents and to further purify the air.

The processing chamber alone is sufficient to treat the air. As air passes through, it is exposed to multiple wavelengths of UV light. The first segment of the optics produces wavelengths that deodorize the air flow. It will break down chemical vapors, volatile organic compounds and odors as they travel through the chamber. The second segment of the optics produces wavelengths that kill micro-organisms and prevent them from multiplying. It will kill bacteria, viruses and mold as they travel through the chamber. As water vapor (H2O) passes through the chamber, it is broken down into a hydrogen atom (H) and a hydroxyl (-OH). The hydroxyl molecules are the key to the second part of the treatment process. There have been many applications where the Odorox machine is set outside of the contaminated area. clean air is drawn into the processing chamber, hydroxyls are created and then injected into the contaminated area. The hydroxyls will then go to work on the air, structure and contents of that area. The contaminated air does not need to pass through the processing chamber to be cleaned.

Why use an Odorox hydroxyl generator?

  1. Safer than ozone. Ozone causes damage to plants and the mucous and respiratory tissue in humans and animals.
  2. Odorox can be installed immediately, because hydroxyls are safe for people, pets, plants and sensitive materials. This means that while the physical cleaning is being performed, Odorox is deodorizing simultaneously.
  3. Homeowners can stay home and businesses can stay open while Odorox is operating. This reduces or eliminates additional living expenses (ALE) and business interruption costs for the insurance companies.
  4. Hydroxyls are more effective than any other method. This means that many items previously though to be unsalvageable can now be restored, like rubber, leather and electronics.
  5. Odorox reduces the work involved with cleaning drapes, upholstery, carpets, laundry and dry cleaning. Most of this can now be handled on site.
  6. Odorox does not use chemicals and leaves no residue.
  7. Using an Odorox hydroxyl generator for 12 hours has been proven to reduce the presence of E. coli, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa on stainless steel and cotton fabric by 99%.

PRS uses hydroxyl generators to restore our customers homes to a clean, safe environment in a timely manner.

In what instance would a hydroxyl generator be used?

A hydroxyl generator would be used anywhere odors, bacteria, viruses or mold are present. Some instances are shown below:

  • Fire and smoke restoration
  • Water and flood restoration
  • Mold mitigation
  • Sewage backups
  • Trauma scene and biohazard cleanup
  • Odor elimination
  • Contents restoration
  • Eliminate volatile organic compounds

Handling Lightning Damage

There are nearly 200,000 homeowners insurance claims filed each year due to lightning strikes. Contrary to popular belief, lightning can indeed strike the same place twice. The Empire State Building is struck by lightning about 100 times a year. You should always take a thunderstorm seriously and understand how dangerous and powerful lightning is.  According to NLSI statistics, 1 out of every 200 homes will be struck by lightning each year.

Tips and Facts about Lightning Safety:

Lightning storm

  • Lightning rods can protect a building from catching fire, not from electrical surges. Although, they are not 100 percent effective.
  • Do not use the telephone, because electrical wires may be hit by lightning. Even using a cellular phone is hazardous because the metal parts can conduct lightning.
  • The odds of becoming a lightning victim in the U.S. in any one year is 1 in 700,000. The odds of being struck in your lifetime is 1 in 3,000.Lightning not only occurs during thunderstorms, but it may also take place during volcanic eruptions, forest fires, hurricanes and nuclear explosions.
  • Lightning starts about 4,400 house fires each year.
  • A motor car with a metal top can offer you some protection—but keep your hands from the metal sides.
  • Victims of lightning do not retain the charge and are not “electrified.” It is safe to help them.
  • Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.
  • Do not lie on concrete floors and do not lean against concrete walls.

What Do You Do If Your Home Is Struck By Lightning?

lightning hits home

A bolt of lightning can reach temperatures up to 50,000 degrees, which is five times hotter than the surface of the sun. Do not take a shower, stay off your land-line phone, avoid contact with electrical equipment and cords… you probably have heard these standard precautions to take during a lightning storm over and over again. But the fact is that the leading cause of indoor lightning injuries is phone use. Lightning can travel long distances in both phone and electrical wires, particularly in rural areas. Taking precautions can absolutely reduce your chance for injury.

Lightning can enter your home in three main ways: (1) a direct strike, (2) through wires or pipes that extend outside the structure, and (3) the ground. Once the lightning has entered your home it can travel through the electrical, phone, plumbing, and radio or television reception systems.  Lightning can ruin your electrical system in your home and it can also cause a fire. The fire could very well start within the walls so you may not notice it until it’s too late. You should call 911 immediately after your home is struck by lightning. The fire department handles all lightning calls and they are equipped with thermal imaging cameras to locate a possible fire burning in your home. They also will be able to survey the damages and let you and your family know when it is deemed safe to enter again.

Handling the Aftermath of Lightning Damage

lightning causes fire to house

After you have gotten everyone out safely and the fire department has assessed your home you may be left with damages. A standard home owner’s insurance policy should cover damages caused by lightning, including fires and fried electronics. Below are some tips you can use that will help get your home back in order:

  • Keep detailed records of all big-ticket purchases such as TVs, laptops and other expensive electronics. The insurance company will want to see proof of ownership.
  • Report a lightning strike to your agent as soon as possible.
  • Keep accurate records of how much you spend repairing or replacing items.
  • Review your policy for specific coverage information.
  • Check with your claim representative before you discard any items you plan to claim as damaged.

Lightning’s destruction can be random. In some instances your computer could be fried yet your T.V. still works. You should check all electrical equipment that was plugged in during the time when the lightning struck to inspect for damage. It could take weeks before you are able to discover all of the damages the lightning caused to your home. In the event that your home catches fire from the extreme heat produced from lightning, you will need to hire a professional to restore your home back to its original state. PRS is available 24/7 to assist with any disaster you may face. We are fully equipped to handle all fire and smoke damage. How to Deal With Fire Damage at Home?

Surviving a fire presents a lot of challenges to homeowners. There is the emotional side of the loss. In addition to that, they have to face the damages caused by the fire as well. If you are currently facing this ordeal, do not fret. Here are ways to deal with the damages caused by fire:

Assess the damage

It might be difficult to look at your home after a fire. But this is an essential step to start with the rebuilding process. The first thing you need to do is to open the doors and windows. This is to eliminate the bad odor as well as to let fresh air in. After that, check the affected areas of the property. How was the damage on the floor, wall, roof, door, window and other areas of the house? Take note of your evaluation.

Aside from the damage inflicted on the different parts of the house, check the damage on the furniture and appliances as well. Can you still use some of the furniture or appliances? If they have been destroyed, do you need to replace them right away? This will help you determine the things that you need to purchase first.

Check your insurance coverage

You can look into the copy of your insurance policy and find out the coverage in case of fire. You can also call your insurance company to better understand this. Prepare the necessary requirements for your claim too. Whatever amount you can claim from your insurance company is a big help in rebuilding or restoring your home.

Contact a restoration specialist

A reliable restoration specialist will help you plan the restoration process.  The planning stage is crucial because this will affect the entire process. Divide the tasks and choose the project that needs to be done first. How is your electrical line? How about your water ways?  Was there damage to your water heater?

Prepare your home for restoration

To make the repair and rebuilding process easier, start cleaning up your home. Remove the things that are no longer working and dispose of the scraps. You do not want these things in your house. Aside from reminding you of the disaster, this can also present many health hazards. Besides, you will be able to plan easily once your home is clear of all these unnecessary items.

Have a timetable

Restoring your home is a process. However, if you want it to be done on timely basis, make sure that you have a realistic time table. Schedule the tasks at hand and make sure that everyone who is part of the restoration process is aware of it. Everyone involved in the rebuilding process should also do his or her best to meet their deadlines.

Protect you home from fire

Surely, you do not want to go through such disaster again. You can prevent fire from happening again by installing fire protective equipment at home. You can have smoke detectors in key areas to alarm you. Make sure that you place your fire extinguisher in strategic places as well. Most importantly, avoid fire by understanding its different causes and inspecting your home for potential sources of fire.

Dealing with the damages caused by fire can be difficult. But with proper planning and execution, you can have your home repaired or rebuilt in no time.

Dealing with Smoke Damage

Fire damage isn’t the only thing to worry about. Smoke damage comes as deadly as the fire that brought it. Smoke damage is not dependent on the size of the fire. Smoke damage can be proportioned to type of combusting materials. Smoke Damage is one of the delicate damages that need to be taken care of immediately.

Most common smoke damage occurs as a result of fire, but not limited to that. Visually, it is irritating and the damage is not limited to being an eyesore.  Health issues arise from smoke damage. Typically respiratory problems result from smoke but risks also range from skin allergies and irritations to headaches.

Areas like Tampa may consider smoke damage a least in their priority of restoration. But, smoke damage should be held in top priority because detailed restoration procedures like stain removal and odor removal are quite the task. The most dangerous part of smoke damage is residue. Smoke damages leave residue from the burning materials whose potent effects may not be known. Smoke residue can be a health risk or have corrosive properties that can bring long term damage to property.

Wet and Dry Smoke

Smoke moves with temperature moving to open spaces, to ceilings, wall cracks and dividers – practically anywhere. There are generally two types of smoke known to bring damage to property and health. These are the wet and dry smoke.

Wet smoke is a result of low heat and produces a denser smoke and a stronger pungent odor. Wet smoke produce smears and stains that semi permanently attach themselves to surfaces. These stains cannot be removed through simple brushing.

Dry Smoke on the other hand is a result of high temperature fire. Stains from a dry smoke may be comparable to what a charcoal is – really hard to deal its stains and smudges easily.
